After the emergence of the Bluetongue virus serotype eight (BTV-8), which was unexpected, in 2006 in northern Europe, another Bunyaviridae family, referred to as the Schmallenberg virus (SBV) also emerged in 2011 in Europe resulting to a new disease in ruminants which proved to be economically significant. This SBV virus, grouped in the genus Ortobunyavirus and the family of Bunyaviridae, initially detected in Germany, Belgium, and the Netherlands in the year 2011.
