What is the main role and responsibility of a journal Editor?

The key role of a journal editor is to promote scholarship in the specialist field associated with the journal, whilst also promoting the journal as the best journal to publish in.  For any journal, the editor will need to encourage new and established authors to submit articles and set up a reliable panel of expert reviewers. Editors are also responsible for offering feedback to reviewers when required and ensure that any feedback to authors is constructive.

It is an Editor’s responsibility to ensure that a journal has sufficient articles in their editorial system for all their Issues per year. An Editor’s role is vital to the success of the journal and most importantly the dissemination of research and scholarly articles.

Roles and Responsibilities of an Editor-in-Chief

  • Making a final decision on acceptance/rejection of a manuscript.
  • Maintain the highest standards of ethics and competence.
  • Helps in identifying peer reviewers.
  • Helps in selecting editorial members.
  • Taking suggestions on each process of the journal.
  • Promote the journal at conferences and meetings.
  • Contributing Editorial.
  • Suggestions for special issue topics.
  • Suggesting journal to indexing agencies in consultation with the publisher.

Roles and Responsibilities of a Managing Editor

  • Maintain the highest standards of ethics and competence.
  • Supervise editing of manuscripts for each issue concerning scientific writing and layout conventions.
  • Suggesting changes to enhance the content quality of the journal.
  • Systematic evaluation of the review reports, hold a vital decision on paper acceptance or rejection.
  • Promote the journal at conferences and meetings.
  • Contributing articles and reviews on trending topics in your particular specialization.
  • Occasionally, solicit articles / interesting work from your colleagues/acquaintances and help

Roles and Responsibilities of an Associate Editor

  • Suggesting suitable reviewers.
  • Ensuring that the publication maintains the highest quality while adhering to the publication rules and procedures of the journal.
  • Occasionally, solicit articles / interesting work from your colleagues/acquaintances and help
  • Promote the journal at conferences and meetings.
  • Submit an Inaugural Article which may have multiple authors, but the Associate Editor must be a corresponding author.
  • Suggest and review the special issues as well.
  • Contributing articles and reviews on trending topics in your particular specialization.

Roles and Responsibilities of a Statistical Editor

  • It provides statistical direction to the journal.
  • Validating statistical methodology, trends, and results.
  • Ensures that the statistical tests used were appropriate, the results are properly interpreted and reported.
  • Avoid outdated/invalid methods, even if pre-specified in the protocol.
  • Contributing articles and reviews on trending topics in your particular specialization.

Roles and Responsibilities of an Editorial & Advisory Board

  • Advance the standing of the journal in the scientific community and increase its impact.
  • Selection and guidance of reviewers and review process.
  • Formulating policies and guidelines on ethical publishing practices
  • Contribute an article once a year.
  • Editorial Board members will encourage the submission of articles to the Journal in their network.

Roles and Responsibilities of an Editorial Assistant

Identify gaps in methodology with a thorough technical review. Improve the language, structure, flow of the manuscript, re-editing and reformatting of the research, grammatical and technical errors makes formatting changes according to the journal’s guidelines and communicates the changes and suggestions via comments.

Note: For any submitted article where the Editor is directly involved as a Principal Author will be given a complete waiver on publication charges i.e no APC will be levied. In case of any article recommended by an Editor, only a 20% relaxation will be provided on the total publication amount.
