    <abstract language="eng">The purpose of research is to isolate Streptomyces species from west coast of India for the production of antibiotic. Streptomyces species A3 was isolated from sediments of Alibag west coastal region of India. The species A3 was identified by morphological, cultural, physiological and biochemical characteristics. The antibiotic was produced in maltose yeast extract medium prepared in artificial seawater. Maximum activity was obtained after seven days fermentation at 280C, at pH 7. By using UV, 1H NMR, 13C NMR and mass spectra, the structure of compound was identified as N- [2-(4-hydroxyphenyl) ethyl] acetamide. The acetamide antibiotic exhibited broad antimicrobial activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria as well as fungi. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of acetamide antibiotic against different microorganisms ranged from 30 to 105 μg/ml. This is the new report of acetamide antibiotic production from marine Streptomyces species.</abstract>
